Winter Weather Safety and Tips

Winter is far from over here in South Carolina even with our recent mild temperatures. In fact, we often get some of our worst winter storms in February and March with freezing temperatures lasting well into the beginning of April! It’s important to remain cautious during the colder season in order to prevent an accident or injury. We’ve put together a few safety tips to help you avoid a personal injury this winter!

Plan Ahead

Make a game plan! If you’ve got somewhere to be in the early morning or after dark, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. You never know what road conditions may be like, especially if we’ve had some rain mixed with low temperatures. Roads and bridges can easily freeze overnight causing increased driving risks. Especially in our area, any precipitation we get turns to ice. Take your time, be attentive, and avoid traveling during peak traffic times if you can.

Home & Vehicle Maintenance

Keeping up with the maintenance of your vehicles and your home is of the upmost importance during colder weather. You may have already done this, but it’s good to keep a check on things too throughout the season too. For your home, make sure you have winterized your pipes, inspected your roof, cleaned your fireplace and chimney, and have the necessary tools for potential storms and power outages. For your vehicle, inspect your brakes, tires and fluid levels and carry basic supplies inside your car in case of an emergency. It is also a good idea to replace your windshield wipers in case of bad weather!

Injury Prevention

We’ve talked about driving and home safety, but what about keeping yourself safe? Wintery conditions can increase the risk of accidents on roadways and on the job. Slips and falls, muscle strains, and aches can all easily occur if you aren’t careful. Make sure you wear proper footwear for your environment and take shorter strides while you are walking. Even if the ground looks normal, there could still be some icy patches that are hard to see!

Although a lot of us may be ready for the beautiful springtime weather, we still need to be cautious and aware of winter weather risks and storms. Since we are not used to bad winters in our area, we are not always equipped to handle them. Stay safe and remain alert as we navigate the end of the season!
