Irv Philpot Addresses University of South Carolina School of Law

Attorney Irv Philpot recently had the privilege of speaking to the University of South Carolina School of Law‘s Sports Law Class on the topic of Workers’ Compensation and the recent opinions suggesting that college athletes are “employees”. He also took the opportunity to encourage the law students by reminding them that lawyers who get it right make a living HELPING PEOPLE!
In his presentation to 2nd and 3rd year law students, Irv illuminated the many issues which naturally follow from the NIL legislation that has swept the nation. This legislation pushes the issue of student athletes being re-characterized as employees, triggering rights to Workers Compensation protections and benefits as well as other pro-employee legislation such as worker safety.
Also in the conversation were SC Senator Marlon Kimpson and associate Graham Maiden (an attorney at Motley Rice), Carri Grube-Lybarker, the Head of Enforcement for SC Department of Consumer Affairs and her Enforcement Deputy, Kelly Rainsford. This class is taught by adjunct professors David Wyatt of Wyatt Law, PA and Joe MucCulloch of McCulloch and Schillaci.
Thanks for allowing the Philpot Law Firm to jump in on the conversation, UofSC! A big thank you to David Wyatt of Wyatt Law, PA and Joe McCulloch for the invitation.
