Cargo securement inspection event

Truckers in South Carolina have most likely prepared for the annual International Roadcheck inspection event. The event, which is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, is being held from Tuesday, June 6, 2017, through Thursday, June 8, 2017, in the U.S. and Canada.

The annual 72-hour event is designed to implement initiatives that focus on commercial truck safety enforcement, compliance and education. For this year, the focus will be on cargo securement. Even though verifying the securement of cargo is a part of the separate Level I inspections, the CVSA states that it is being highlighted so that drivers and fleets are reminded of its importance.

According to the CVSA, violations of load securement regulations can be avoided by ensuring all of the vehicle's cargo and equipment are properly secured. Tie-downs should also be inspected and replaced if there are indications of damage and wear. Examples of violations include the failure to secure truck equipment, insufficient tie-downs, the failure to prevent the loss or shifting of a load, damaged tie-downs and loose tie-downs. To assist drivers and fleets ahead of the inspection spree, the CVSA has assembled tips and created a flyer regarding cargo securement. The CVSA states that during every minute in North America during the inspection spree, an average of 15 buses and trucks are inspected. In 2016, 21.5 percent of trucks were placed out of service, as well as 3.4 percent of drivers. That corresponds to 9,080 trucks and 1,436 drivers.

Occupants of other vehicles who are injured in a trucking accident should speak with a personal injury attorney. Multiple factors may have contributed to the accident and may be cause for a lawsuit. This may include negligent driving, an unsecured cargo, vehicle defects, or inadequate truck maintenance.
