Rise in fatal large truck accidents reported

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, between 2014 and 2015, there was an 8 percent rise in the number of large trucks involved in fatal accidents around the country. Of the 415,000 motor vehicle accidents involving trucks that were reported to police, 1 percent were fatal and around 20 percent resulted in injuries. The report defined large trucks as those weighing more than 10,000 pounds and found that 3,598 accidents ,some of which took place in South Carolina, involved this type of vehicle.

Most fatal crashes that involved large trucks also involved one other vehicle. Single-vehicle truck crashes involved bicycles, other non-motorized vehicles or pedestrians, and these accounted for around 20 percent of fatal crashes. Most fatal accidents also happened on rural roads with only one-quarter happening on interstate highways.

In 2015, nearly 4,000 truck drivers were involved in fatal crashes. There was a 2 percent increase from the previous year in fatalities among truck occupants. Only 11 percent of those occupant fatalities were someone other than the truck driver.

Accidents in which truck drivers are at fault could occur because a driver is drunk, fatigued or distracted. Even a nonfatal accident could be life-changing and leave another driver or passenger with a permanent disability. Whether or not victims incur injuries from which they can fully recover, they might have significant medical expenses and miss time from work. An insufficient offer of compensation from the insurance company may add to the stress an injured person suffers. Therefore, a person who is injured in a truck accident might want to consult an attorney. The attorney may be able to negotiate with the insurance company to get a more appropriate level of compensation. If it is necessary to file a civil lawsuit, both the driver and the trucking company might be liable.
