Workers' compensation in South Carolina for on-the-job fatalities

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has set in place strict guidelines and enforceable laws which employers must follow to help keep their employees safe while they are working on the job. Most business owners are diligent and make their employees' safety a top priority. Even with the best of practices and guidelines diligently observed, accidents and fatalities can and do still occur. Should a South Carolina resident suffer a work-related injury or a family member lose his or her life while working on the job, the workers' compensation program can provide benefits to help ease the financial burden a workplace accident or fatality can cause.

A 68-year-old male was injured on the job on Saturday, March 11. The victim was pulled into a large machine he was operating. He was trapped for about a half of an hour before the local fire department and EMS personnel were able to free him.

The victim was transported to a local hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries. The investigation into this tragedy is ongoing.

Workers' compensation laws are designed to handle disability and work-related injury claims. In the unfortunate circumstance of an on-the-job death, benefits may still be available to surviving spouses and minor children. When a South Carolina employee is injured or killed in a work-related accident, financial compensation may be available once a claim is filed. An experienced attorney who understands workers' compensation laws can provide assistance during all stages of the claims process and help with an appeal if necessary.
