Preventing eye injuries in the workplace

For South Carolina workers, protecting their eyesight is extremely important. However, many fail to do so. Approximately 2,000 workers around the country suffer a work-related eye injury every day even though about 90 percent of the accidents could be prevented by simply wearing appropriate eye protection devices.

Eye injuries can range from eyestrain and dry eyes to trauma. People who suffer an eye trauma risk losing their vision or may even become blind. About 40 percent of all eye injuries occur in mining, manufacturing and construction. However, even office workers who are required to spend their days in front of a computer can also suffer from work-related eye injuries.

For these workers, there are tips available to help prevent eyestrain and other associated injuries. One of the most important methods to prevent eyestrain is to follow the 20-20-20 rule. Workers should take a quick break every 20 minutes and look at an object that is about 20 feet away for approximately 20 seconds. This allows them to go back to blinking normally. Office workers can also reduce the glare on their digital screens and adjust the lighting to keep eyestrain to a minimum.

Although often associated with workplace accidents, workers' compensation benefits can be available for this type of injury as well, and they could include reimbursement of medical expenses as well as partial wage replacement during the recovery period. However, it would not be unusual for an employer to dispute this type of claim and assert that the injury was incurred outside of the work environment. As a result, it could be advisable for such a claimant to have legal assistance at the outset of the process.
