Workers' compensation for work injuries in South Carolina

Work-related injuries can happen at any moment, to any employee and at any workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration dictates strict regulations with which business owners must comply. Even with the strictest of regulations and the most diligent of employers, accidents still occur. From small mishaps to fatal injuries, workers' compensation may be available if a South Carolina employee is eligible and the accident occurred while he or she was on the job.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2017, a 43 year-old construction worker from another state died in a work accident. The man lost his life from injuries suffered when a boom collided with a metromover car during a maintenance run. Fortunately, there were no passengers on the metromover. The incident occurred around 1 a.m.

The victim was transported to a local trauma center where he was pronounced dead. One other construction worker was injured. Co-workers helped another employee, who was dangling from the boom, down to safety. The construction company, local police and OSHA are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.

South Carolina workers' compensation laws are designed to handle occupational disability claims. When an employee is injured or becomes sick on the job, financial compensation may be available once a claim is filed. For those who have lost a spouse or minors who have lost a parent to a job-related injury, death benefits through the workers' comp system may be an option. An attorney can provide assistance during all stages of the claim process and help with an appeal if necessary.
