Training reduces workplace hazards of scissor lifts

South Carolina companies that have scissor lifts at their work sites should fully train their employees in their safe operation. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, inadequate worker training contribute to most injuries and fatalities caused by scissor lifts. Serious accidents involve crush injuries, falling and electrocution.

Any workers who use these lifts should know that a guardrail must be in place on the work platform. People should never stand on the rails, and the platform should be positioned as close as possible to the target work area to prevent employees from leaning out too far.

OSHA guidelines emphasize the importance of following the manufacturer's instructions when moving the scissor lift. Well-trained workers will know that the lift should only be positioned on a firm and level surface. Hazards such as slopes, bumps, edges and debris must be avoided. Windy conditions present another hazard when workers use lifts outside. Manufacturers typically build this equipment to remain stable only in winds below 28 mph.

Proximity to electrical power sources creates another danger because electricity could arc across empty space and strike the lift. Workers should maintain at least 10 feet of distance between the platform and power sources.

Most South Carolina employers are required to have some form of workers' compensation coverage for their employees who are injured on the job. A worker who obtains benefits is precluded from filing a separate lawsuit against the employer. However, if the accident was caused by a non-employer third party, such as the manufacturer of a defective piece of equipment or machinery, an attorney might find it advisable in some cases to bring a lawsuit against such a party.
