NHTSA looks to implement 'driver mode' on smartphones

While many South Carolina drivers understand the dangers of distracted driving, lots of motorists still use their smartphones while driving. To prevent distracted driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration proposed a set of guidelines for smartphones and other devices that may be used in cars. Public comments will be accepted on the proposed guidelines until Feb. 3.

One way the NHTSA is looking to cut down on distracted driving is to link smartphones to in-vehicle systems. When a device is paired to the vehicle, the device interface will be inaccessible. This would prevent the driver from taking their eyes off the road and looking down at the phone. However, emergency services would still be available.

If the smartphone or device cannot be directly connected to a vehicle, the NHTSA recommends that manufacturers create a manual "driver mode." This mode would keep the motorist locked out of many functions that would involve watching videos, displaying photos and texting. This option may be easier to implement as it can be difficult for vehicles to determine if a device is being used by a driver or passenger.

A car or truck accident caused by a distracted driver can lead to serious injuries and even death. If a person is involved in an accident that was caused by a distracted driver, a personal injury attorney may help the victim file a lawsuit against the responsible driver. The injured person can potentially seek compensation for damages such as the cost of medical bills and lost income. If the responsible driver was working at the time the accident occurred, the injured person may potentially even file the claim against the driver's employer. If negotiations do not lead to a settlement, the attorney may represent the victim in trial.
