Workplace injuries and illnesses continue to decline

South Carolina employees may be happy to learn that the number of annual work-related injuries and illnesses has been dropping for over a decade. A report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Oct. 27 shows that the downward trend continued into 2015. Last year, there were around 2.9 million nonfatal work-related injuries and illnesses reported to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

According to the BLS report, the number of workplace injuries and illnesses that was recorded last year works out to a rate of three cases for every 100 full-time employees, the lowest rate since 2002. A spokesman for OSHA said that the new data is encouraging, and the improvements in workplace safety is the result of the tireless efforts of employers, worker advocates, unions and government agencies.

Lately, OSHA has been focused on efforts to encourage employers to report more of the workplace accidents that occur. With its new record-keeping rule and anti-retaliation provisions, OSHA is also trying to encourage injury reporting from employees that may fear retaliation. Another safety concern that OSHA is focused on right now is the aging workforce and its health issues.

Some on-the-job accidents are caused by a failure on the part of an employer or employee to pay heed to safety issues while others may be the fault of a non-employer third party, such as the manufacturer of a defective piece of equipment. In the latter situation, an attorney can determine whether it would be advisable or even possible to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits as well as a lawsuit against the third party.
