OSHA considers updating maritime industry safety standards

If the Occupational Safety and Health Association has its way, maritime industries in South Carolina and across the country may be required to update their safety standards. Before the agency requires the changes, however, it has requested information and comments from shipyards by Dec. 7, 2016.

A recent OSHA report noted that the maritime industry has not updated its safety standards since 1971. Before making changes to Subpart E of the Occupation Safety and Health Standards in Shipyard Employment, which reflects the industry's standards concerning shipbreaking, ship repair, shipbuilding and various other types of shipyard jobs, OSHA has issued a Request for Information. In the request, the agency is asking people to submit their opinions and comments relating to safety procedures, fall protection, how to erect, use and dismantle scaffolding systems, and information regarding safe access to and from shipyard structures.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that almost half of all fatal shipyard accidents between 1992 and 2014 occurred when an employee fell, tripped or slipped to a lower level of a shipyard's facility. According to data from OSHA Integrated Management Information Systems, of the 32 major falls that occurred from 2002 to 2014 and resulted in hospitalization, 80 percent were fatalities. From 2003 to 2013, there were about 640 shipyard employees per year who suffered a trip, slip or fall injury and missed work as a result, according to BLS occupational injury data.

People who have been injured on the job may apply for workers' compensation benefits. If they are denied these benefits, which can help pay their medical bills and living expenses, they might consider speaking with an attorney for advice.
