Other nations pull ahead of the U.S. in road safety

The widespread disregard of seat belt laws and a persistently high number of drunk drivers are two main reasons why advances in road safety in South Carolina and around the country have lagged behind the gains made in other developed nations. This was one of the conclusions of a report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention July 6. The report compared traffic accident fatalities in the U.S. between 2000 and 2013 with the death rates of pedestrians, motorists and cyclists in 19 other wealthy countries.

Traffic accident fatalities fell by 31 percent in the United States during the time period studied, but death rates fell by an average of 56 percent in countries like Sweden, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom. Spain has lowered its accident fatality rates by more than 75 percent. The CDC researchers said that about 18,000 Americans lives could have been saved if the U.S. had achieved the same kind of improvements in road safety as the other nations studied.

The CDC report indicates that as many as 3,000 lives could be saved in the United States each year if vehicle occupants simply fastened their safety belts. Only Belgian and Austrian drivers are less likely to buckle up than Americans according to the CDC. Only Canadian drivers are more likely to die in an alcohol-related crash than their American counterparts, and the CDC report recommends more aggressive law enforcement in this area and the reduction of allowable BAC levels nationwide.

Those killed in traffic accidents often face an uncertain financial future, and personal injury attorneys may help victims seek compensation for their lost income in situations where their loved one died due to reckless or negligent behavior. Wrongful death lawsuits could also seek compensation for expenses such as property damage, medical bills and funeral costs.
