Teen drivers and accident risk

For teen drivers, Memorial Day marks the beginning of what AAA calls the "100 deadliest days" on the road in South Carolina and across the nation. During this period, accidents involving teen motorists between the ages of 16 and 19 increase and deaths are 16 percent higher than any other time of year. Over the past five years, an average of 1,022 people have died annually in accidents involving teen drivers during this time. One reason why teens cause so many accidents is there propensity for cell phone use.

An analysis done by the University of Iowa of 2,229 dash cam videos found that 12 percent of accidents involving teen drivers were caused by operating a cell phone while driving. Within six seconds of the collision, these teens were either talking on, texting or otherwise using their phone. A further 11 percent of accidents were the result of attending to or otherwise looking for something in the car.

Cell phone use has both increased and evolved over the years. Instead of just using phones for making calls, teens may now decide to look at social media or text while driving. According to the Pew Research Center, 92 percent of teens from the age of 15 to 17 have cell phones and 24 percent say that they are online constantly.

After a car crash, it may be possible to receive compensation from the motorist who caused the crash. Compensation may help recover lost wages, lost future earnings and medical costs. An attorney might be able to prove that driver negligence led to the crash occurring. This may be done by examining physical evidence at the scene or talking to witnesses of the crash. Cases may be settled either in court or through informal negotiations outside of court.
