Dangerous jobs South Carolina residents partake in

According to the Census of Fatal Occupation Injuries issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 111 deaths for every 100,000 loggers around the country in 2014. Workers in the logging industry face a variety of workplace hazards such as falling tree branches or unpredictable terrain. In addition, they are often located in rural areas, which may make it harder to get to a hospital after an injury.

Numerous scenarios could reduce safety of self-driving cars

If the ambitious plans of automakers come to fruition, self-driving cars might become a common sight on South Carolina roads. Although this technology remains in the development phase, manufacturers like Volvo and Google have been touting the potential reduction in accidents that their autonomous vehicles could achieve.

Highway users remain at risk from truck accident injuries

The release of data by the federal government showing a decrease in truck accident fatalities is good news for motorists in South Carolina and across the rest of the U.S., but it comes with another statistic that shows there is still work to be done to make road travel safer. During the same period that trucking accident fatalities were going down by 5 percent, injuries caused by a semi-truck crash or other trucking accident were up by 21 percent.

Fatal work-related injuries increased in 2014

Many South Carolina residents work in dangerous occupations. The U.S. Department of Labor has released updated statistics showing that the number of people who died on the job in 2014 was at the highest amount since 2008. According to the report, there were 4,821 fatal occupational injuries during 2014 and 4,679 during 2013. The rate of death per 100,000 full time equivalent workers was slightly higher than it has been for 2013.
