Preventing construction TBIs in South Carolina

Construction jobs sites see more fatal and nonfatal traumatic brain injuries than any other American workplace. Between 2003 and 2010, more than 2,000 construction workers around the country died from such an injury. This accounted for 25 percent of construction deaths and 24 percent of occupational deaths overall during that period. Those who worked for firms with less than 20 workers were 2.5 times more likely to die after suffering a TBI compared to those who were with firms that have 100 or more workers.

Research conducted by NIOSH shows that age and gender played a role in whether or not an individual died from a TBI in the period studied. Men were seven times more likely than females to suffer a fatal TBI while workers 65 and older were more likely to suffer a fatal TBI compared to workers between the ages of 25 and 34. Falls from ladders, scaffolds and roofs accounted for a majority of fatalities caused by work-related TBIs.

While the rate of fatal TBIs may be higher among those who work in construction, the overall fatality rate is falling, and there are many steps that can be taken to keep workers safe. Guardrails, proper harness sizing and the use of smartphone apps are all effective tools. These safety measures may stop a worker from falling from a ladder or falling through an unprotected roof.

Those who are injured on the job may take weeks or months to recover. They may be eligible for workers' compensation benefits that will help them pay medical bills or living expenses. An attorney for an injured victim can review the circumstances of the situation to see if a non-employer third party, such as the manufacturer of a defective piece of equipment, should be held responsible to pay damages in a separate civil lawsuit.
