Is hands-free safe enough?

Some people may feel that South Carolina roads may be a little less dangerous with the advent of hands-free technology, which provides motorists with the means of maintaining communications without the need to look at devices. However, experts suggest that the brain's engagement during hands-free communication could still create distractions that have the potential to cause accidents. In fact, the brain continues to be distracted even after the use of communications or infotainment technology has ceased.

Preventing construction TBIs in South Carolina

Construction jobs sites see more fatal and nonfatal traumatic brain injuries than any other American workplace. Between 2003 and 2010, more than 2,000 construction workers around the country died from such an injury. This accounted for 25 percent of construction deaths and 24 percent of occupational deaths overall during that period. Those who worked for firms with less than 20 workers were 2.5 times more likely to die after suffering a TBI compared to those who were with firms that have 100 or more workers.

Staying safe on towers in South Carolina

According to OSHA, there were 36 deaths related to communication tower accidents from 2011 to 2015. Since April 2015, the agency has been asking for feedback to devise ways to improve communication tower worker safety. A 2016 workshop conducted by OSHA and the FCC went over several best practices derived from that feedback. One issue that impacted worker safety was the use of subcontractors.
