South Carolina teen drivers and new NHTSA ads

South Carolina residents may have seen a 2015 campaign launched as a partnership between the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Ad Council, which has targeted the prevalence of drunk driving among teenagers. As part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, the campaign features advertisements that compare drunk driving to teenage 'party fouls. The purpose of the campaign is to help teenage drivers become aware of how much more serious the consequences of drunk driving are compared to these party fouls.

According to the NHTSA, nearly one-third of all teenagers who are killed in a car accident have alcohol in their system. Car accidents are the leading cause of death among American teenagers and almost half of those teenagers were driving at the time. The Ad Council chose to film the drunk driving campaign on iPhone cameras and they were posted on Tumblr, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. All PSAs aired on time donated by the media.

The NHTSA and Ad Council have been participating in campaigns designed to reduce the prevalence of drunk driving since the 1980s. From the 'Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk campaign to the Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving," the partnership has been highly effective. Between 2005 and 2013, the number of young males who said they would find alternative transportation rather than drive buzzed fell from 47 percent.

Those who have been affected by a drunk driving accident may be eligible for compensation. Whether the accident involved a distracted driver, a drunk driver or was determined to be a hit and run, injured victims have options. A personal injury lawyer may be able to help hold a negligent driver accountable for such damages as pain and suffering, medical expenses and lost wages. It is important to seek compensation for long-term care costs and other damages as well.
