Reducing accidents involving red light runners

Motorists who ignore red lights cause hundreds of injuries and deaths each year in South Carolina, and 97 percent of drivers consider red light runners to be a serious threat to their safety, according to a 2004 study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Intersection accidents often occur at high speeds and result in catastrophic injuries, and another study conducted by Old Dominion University discovered that one in three people know someone who was either killed or injured in a crash caused by a red light runner.

According to the NHTSA, motor vehicle accidents involving a motorist who ran through a red light claimed the lives of 762 road users and injured a further 165,000 in 2008. While red light runners often lose their lives in the accidents they cause, studies show that about half of those killed in these crashes were either pedestrians or occupants of a vehicle that did not run a red light.

Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals that red light runners are often young men with a record of reckless driving. Measures that could reduce the number of intersection accidents include lengthening the time that traffic signals remain amber and replacing traffic lights with roundabouts or traffic circles.

Proving that a motorist ran through a red light prior to a collision could be important in a lawsuit where establishing negligent behavior is necessary. Personal injury attorneys may sometimes be able to prove this by reading police reports or witness statements, or they could look at the images recorded by cameras designed to ticket red light runners. However, not all accidents occur at intersections equipped with these cameras, and attorneys could then survey the accident site for signs of private security cameras that may have recorded the accident.
