South Carolina collision leaves 1 dead

A collision involving a moped and a pick-up truck left one person dead in Georgetown on Feb. 21. The driver of the pick-up truck left the scene of the accident but police later located and arrested him.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the fatal car crash happened around 7 p.m. on Hicks Road, near Old Pee Dee and Carvers Bay roads. Police responded to a call about an accident to find a pick-up truck had hit a moped on the rear, killing the moped operator. The driver of the pick-up abandoned the scene of the accident, but police later located him.

The man was arrested and faces charges in relation to the incident. The 53-year-old Georgetown man has been charged with leaving the scene of a collision that resulted in a death and felony DUI resulting in death. He was being held in Georgetown County Jail with bail set at $150,000. It was unclear how police had determined the man had been driving under the influence, but they might have observed erratic behavior or performed blood alcohol level tests on the man.

In cases like this, the family of the decedent might consider filing a wrongful death claim. A personal injury lawyer assisting the family might use the information from the police investigation to create a case showing the driver was liable for the crash and negligent in their actions. Violating the rules of the road, such as by driving under the influence, can be used as evidence that a driver was being negligent and therefore responsible for the injuries or death of a victim. If the family of someone who dies in an accidents makes a successful claim, the family can receive compensation for economic and non-economic losses.
