Motorcycle passenger dies in South Carolina accident

A 51-year-old woman was killed in a multiple-vehicle accident on Highway 321 in Gaston on March 7. Under investigation by the Lexington County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident involved two pickups and two motorcycles.

It was reported that a pickup truck traveling on the highway struck two motorcycles that had been stopped in traffic. The impact forced one of the motorcycles to collide with another pickup truck that had also been stopped in traffic. The accident caused a female passenger on one of the motorcycles to be ejected from the bike. She had not been wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Officials indicated that the injuries she sustained were fatal, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup that hit the other vehicles, a 35-year-old male, has reportedly been charged with felony DUI.

Operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol violates a driver's legal obligation to drive with reasonable care. A drunk driving accident harbors the potential for significant damage to other motorists, including motorcyclists and their passengers. Additionally, the design of a motorcycle provides less protection for riders than other passenger vehicles. Thus, if a drunk driver hits a motorcycle, the accident is more likely to result in serious injury or death. The aftermath of such an accident can have considerable effects on other victims involved as well as the family of the deceased.

A deceased victim's family may suffer emotional as well as financial losses. A lawyer may be able to negotiate the terms of any financial recovery owed to the family regarding the victim's death. By filing a wrongful death lawsuit, families may be able to recover damages for funeral expenses, lost income and other damages.
