Understanding whiplash injuries

Whiplash is a common label for an injury suffered in car accidents, sports accidents and falls. Typically involving a quick back-and-forth motion of the neck of the victim, whiplash injuries can affect a number of different muscles and bones and symptoms can vary widely.

When a victim suffers a whiplash injury, it typically results in a sprain or strain of the neck. This affects the ligaments that support and protect the vertebrae. Ligaments throughout the neck, especially those that cover the facet joints in the back of the spine, are susceptible to the motion of the whiplash incident and may suffer from tears. The muscles and tendons in the area might also be stretched excessively, which would result in strains.

Stiffness and pain are common symptoms for such injuries, and these symptoms tend to be present in the affected areas. In some cases, however, the stiffness and pain might spread to different parts of the body, including the shoulders and arms of the victim. In some more serious cases, nausea, dizziness and blurred vision may occur, but these symptoms typically dissipate soon after the accident occurs.

The costs associated with treatment of whiplash injuries can quickly become a financial burden for a victim and a victim's family. In addition, the physical difficulties that a person might face may cause them to take time off work, limiting their ability to earn income. However, it may be possible to collect compensation for these types of damages if evidence suggests that another party is responsible for causing the accident that led to the injury. Discussing such cases with a personal injury attorney may help a victim understand his or her rights and eligibility for court-ordered compensation.
