Motor vehicle accidents and work injuries

Negligent drivers make the roads of South Carolina less safe for workers. A report issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that an average of 338 pedestrian workers were killed each year between 2003 and 2010 as the result of vehicle collisions. This makes vehicle collisions the leading cause of deaths on the job in the U.S.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that 36 percent of all work-related deaths are associated with motor vehicle accidents. The same CDC report also indicated that between 2003 and 2010, an average of 1,275 workers were killed in vehicle accidents on public roads each year. These accidents are not only tragic, they are also costly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that each work-related traffic accident that results in an injury costs employers $74,000.

Currently, no federal occupational safety guidelines exist for workers who drive small company vehicles or personal vehicles on the job. In many cases, it is up to the employer to provide training and to ensure that employees accomplish their work tasks in a safe and responsible manner. Supervisors sometimes use local city or state safety laws as a guideline for establishing their own safety practices. In some cases, supervisors may choose to supplement the existing safety guidelines with additional rules that are more suited to a particular job.

Even a high level of safety training may not be enough to prevent a negligent driver from causing an accident to a worker on a job site. When these accidents occur, legal action may be possible. A personal injury attorney may be able to demonstrate the liability of a negligent driver by using evidence from accident investigations and witness statements.
