Accidents caused by large trucks

Many South Carolina motorists might not be cognizant of the perils presented by sharing the roadway with large trucks. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that, in 2012, just under 4,000 people lost their lives in crashes involving large trucks. Among those fatalities, 73 percent were drivers or passengers of vehicles that collided with the truck.

According to the NHTSA, there are several reoccurring causes behind truck accidents. Unsafe driving is a significant cause, as approximately 18 percent of truck drivers who were in a crash in 2012 had a prior conviction for speeding. Alcohol impairment is another cause, with approximately 2 percent of drivers involved in truck accidents in 2012 having a blood alcohol content level of at least .08 percent, the legal limit. While the drivers of passenger vehicles were much more likely to have an illegal blood alcohol content than the truckers, large trucks carry the potential to do more damage during a collision.

Because of their size, large trucks were more likely than passenger vehicles to cause accidents that involved more than one vehicle. In 2012, 81 percent of fatal crashes involving trucks involved at least one other vehicle. Furthermore, crashes that occurred in stopped traffic only resulted in 7 percent of fatal crashes in 2012.

When people become injured in a truck accident, they may retain a lawyer and file a personal injury lawsuit against the truck driver if there is evidence that the driver was responsible for causing the crash. Additionally, the company for which the trucker worked may be held liable for the accident as well, citing negligence in hiring and training.
