Impaired driving statistics and ramifications

South Carolina motorists might be taken aback by certain facts pertaining to impaired driving and the dangers it poses to motorists. More than two dozen people in the United States die every day because of an accident involving a drunk driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of people injured in a drunk-driving accident per day is just as alarming.

Pedestrians involved in 2012 car accidents

Pedestrian safety is always a concern on South Carolina streets; 76,000 pedestrians were injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2012 while 4,743 pedestrians were killed. Individuals can take precautions to reduce the risk of an accident by crossing the street at intersections and crosswalks only, and wearing retro-reflective clothing at night or carrying a flashlight increases visibility. Additionally, it is suggested that pedestrians walk facing traffic on the shoulder of the road when a sidewalk is not available.

Woman killed after being struck by vehicle

The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that a pedestrian was struck and killed while walking alongside Interstate 385 on Oct. 9. According to investigators, the 25-year-old woman was walking in an attempt to flag down a vehicle to help with an accident that had previously occurred on the interstate.

Doctor allegedly fails to diagnose black lung in miner

A miner who applied for federal benefits in 2005 had his claim denied by a judge in 2011. The claim was denied despite several doctors determining that he had severe black lung. According to reports, this was largely due to one doctor at Johns Hopkins University whose negative results superseded other opinions. The miner claimed that he was put on oxygen, slept upright in a chair and had trouble breathing due to the issue.

The many costs of automobile accidents

South Carolina drivers might not realize the various costs associated with traffic accidents. In 2010 alone, the economic ramifications of United States traffic accidents amounted to an estimated $1 trillion, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Factored into that number are the loss of productivity and the loss of life attributed to traffic accidents.
