South Carolina hit-and-run kills 1, injures 1

A hit-and-run in Folly killed one person and injured another on Aug. 30. Police arrested the man who fled the scene later in the day, and he faces charges for reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury.

The accident occurred around 2:15 a.m. when a 2004 Honda CRV swerved between 2nd and 3rd Street on West Ashley Avenue, and the Honda veered off the road and struck two pedestrians. The Folly Beach Police Department found the vehicle involved in the accident parked outside the owner's residence, and the Honda had damage to its left front headlight and windshield.

The man was originally charged with leaving the scene of an accident with bodily injury, but the reckless homicide charge was added when one of the victims in the crash died on Aug. 31. The man is held on a surety bond of $300,000.

Car accidents can happen suddenly, but one may be dealing with the aftermath of a crash for a long time. A pedestrian accident could result in serious injuries like broken bones, contusions, head or neck injuries or bruises. When an accident happens because of the negligence of someone else, one might be able to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering related to the wreck by filing a personal injury claim.

WYFF4 Greenville published a list of steps to take after an accident occurs that could be helpful when preparing for a suit in civil court. Witness statements and medical information along with police reports and findings from crash reconstruction experts might be helpful when showing a driver's negligence. Negligent behavior can include drunk driving, speeding, not taking weather conditions into account, texting and driving and ignoring traffic signs.
