South Carolina: Among the nation's worst for drunk driving deaths

Driving while intoxicated is against the law in every state, and this is likely something everyone knows. Despite the fact that this law is widely known -- along with the dangers associated with drunk driving -- people still get behind the wheel of their vehicles after consuming too much alcohol.

According to crash data, this unfortunate patter of behavior manifests all too often in South Carolina. Research cited by WPDE News indicates that the state ranks as third worst among the 50 states when it comes to drunk driving deaths. Statistics from 2012 indicate that 360 people died on South Carolina roads as the result of alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents.

One South Carolina law enforcement official weighed in on the high rate of drunk driving fatalities. The officer identified tourism as a big factor, as people are likely to indulge on vacation. Not only that, but local residents make the inaccurate assumption that they will not be the one to be pulled over by police or cause an accident. However, the reality of this perception is clearly skewed.

The issue of fatal drunk driving accidents is obviously something to be very concerned about. After all, drinking and driving is entirely preventable -- as long as everyone complies with the law and errs on the side of caution before driving.

Drivers who cause a fatal alcohol-related crash can be charged with a felony in South Carolina. This is an important aspect of the legal process, but it's not the only way to address accidents. Victims or their loved ones can look into the possibility of seeking compensation through civil claims. After all, deciding to drive after having too much to drink shows a disregard for the safety of others.
