Two dead in Conway when truck runs stop sign

Intersections may be particularly fatal for drivers, passengers and pedestrians. The United States suffered 8,766 fatalities in intersection or intersection related crashes in 2012. This is a 5.4 percent increase from the 8,317 deaths in these accidents in this country in 2011. South Carolina suffered 863 traffic deaths in 2012 of which 156 were related to an intersection or intersection-related car accident. There were 142 fatalities in intersection crashes reported in the state one year earlier.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, two traffic deaths are blamed on a truck ignoring a stop sign in the Bucksport community south of Conway on Jan. 25. A 2011 Chevrolet pickup truck, heading west on Bucksport Road, drove through a stop sign at the intersection with U.S. 701 near 5:20 p.m. It crashed into a Ford four-door that was traveling south on U.S. 701 with three occupants.

Two of the Ford's occupants died in the car crash. The third occupant was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. The truck also carried four occupants who were injured and taken to Grand Strand Regional.

Charges have not been filed. The Highway Patrol's MAIT reconstruction team is conducting an accident investigation.

Victims of a car accident caused by a driver violating traffic laws governing stop signs or traffic lights may be entitled to compensation for medical treatment, personal injury, lost wages and other losses. Relatives of family members killed in these accidents may be entitled to damages through a wrongful death civil suit. Victims should protect their rights and to assure that filing deadlines for lawsuits are met.
