Teenager charged with fatal pedestrian hit and run crash

Pedestrian deaths in auto crashes are all too prevalent in the United States and in South Carolina. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reported that there were 4,743 pedestrians killed in a pedestrian accident in this country in 2012 which represented 17 percent of all traffic fatalities. This was a 6.4 percent increase from the 4,457 fatalities reported in the United States in 2012. Another 76,000 pedestrians were injured in 2012 in this nation which was a 10 percent increase from 2011. In South Carolina, according to the NHTSA, 123 pedestrians were killed by vehicles in 2012 while 113 deaths were reported for the previous year.

A deadly hit and run in Horry County in the early morning hours of Jan. 18 vividly reflects these grim statistics. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a 17-year-old girl from Conway drove around an ambulance responding to another traffic accident on Nichols Highway near Galivants Ferry around 2:30 a.m. When she drove around the emergency vehicle, she crashed into a pedestrian who was standing next to the ambulance.

The pedestrian, a 48-year-old woman from the Galivants Ferry area, was killed. Multiple instances of trauma after being struck by a vehicle were cited as the official cause of death.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said that the driver continued to drive south on Nichols Highway after she struck the pedestrian. Police pulled her over and arrested her. She faces charges of hit and run, violation of the duties of a driver involved in an accident and reckless homicide resulting in death.

Pedestrians who are hit by a car should seek advice to protect their rights. Victims may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, injuries and lost wages resulting from these accidents. Families of relatives killed in a pedestrian accident may seek compensation in a wrongful death action.
