Police search for hit and run driver

Pedestrians are afforded little protection against reckless and negligent drivers. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reported that 4,432 pedestrians were killed and another 69,000 injured in 2011 in auto crashes in this country. This approximates a fatality every two minutes and an injury every eight minutes. South Carolina suffered 113 pedestrian fatalities in that year, according to the NHTSA. Weekend evenings are the most dangerous period, the NHTSA found, because 39 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur from 8:00 p.m. through 11:59 p.m. on the weekends.

A driver hit a 23-year-old single mother of a 2-year-old son near Campobello in Spartanburg, South Carolina on Sept. 28. The victim had left a barbeque to take a walk. The car crashed into the victim from behind as she was walking south on Old Mill Road on the Saturday evening around 9:50 p.m., according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. She was seriously injured and transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. The host of the barbeque said he heard thumps and a moan when the pedestrian accident occurred.

Troopers are looking for the driver who left the accident scene. The victim's family and friends have posted and handed out fliers asking for assistance. Although police said that they do not know the vehicle's make and model, the fliers claim that the car may have been a light-colored Ford F-150 pickup truck with possible damage to its passenger side.

Pedestrians injured in these type of accidents may have the right to file a personal injury suit. Families of pedestrian accident victims may have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit for the death of a relative in a pedestrian accident.
