Speeding driver cited for 4-car collision on I-77

Speeding drivers pose a risk to motorists and pedestrians and is a major reason why a car accident happens every 10 seconds somewhere in the United States.

Speeding was the indirect cause of a recent chain-reaction accident on South Carolina Interstate 77 near Exit 83. A South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper attempted to stop a 22-year-old Rock Hill motorist who was driving her 2000 four-door Volkswagen 91 mph in a 60 mph speed zone. When the trooper drove his vehicle to the right, the driver steered her car to the highway's left side and stopped suddenly.

After she stopped, a 17-year-old driving a 2000 Chevrolet hit her vehicle. Her car then collided into a car driven by a 60-year-old motorist. The teenager then crashed into a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old Rock Hill motorist.

First-responders rushed to the crash site while traffic stalled. The teenage Chevrolet driver was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The suspected speeder was treated at Piedmont Medical Center and released.

Authorities have since charged the 22-year-old with speeding and illegally stopping in the roadway, according to a Highway Patrol spokesperson.

Car crash victims may be entitled to compensation for medical treatment, lost wages and other losses caused by speeding as well as negligent or reckless driving. Families may also be entitled to compensation for the death of a relative. Auto accident victims and their families should act promptly to obtain accident investigation reports and other evidence indicating that a driver or establishment did not exercise due care or violated the law.
