Teen pedestrian in Taylors killed by vehicle

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that at least 4,280 pedestrians were killed and another 70,000 were injured in traffic accidents in the United States in 2010. This equals a pedestrian killed every 2 hours and one injured every 8 minutes. South Carolina suffered 90 pedestrian fatalities in 2010, according to the NHTSA. These statistics prove that pedestrian accidents are far too prevalent and lethal.

A 19-year-old man was struck and killed in late December by a 1992 Chevrolet as he walked on a road in Taylors. A second and possible third vehicle also struck the victim. The teen died from blunt force trauma from being hit by a car and was declared dead at the accident scene.

The collision is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The driver of the first car was identified and SCHP is also seeking information about other cars that may have struck the victim.

Victims of pedestrian accidents can seek monetary damages in a civil lawsuit if a driver did not exercise the reasonable degree of care, a driver violated the law or where the accident was caused by faulty traffic signals or other property deficiencies. Compensation may reimburse victims for medical expenses, lost wages, rehabilitation and other incurred costs. A family of a pedestrian killed in these accidents may seek compensation in a wrongful death action.

Victims should act promptly to protect their rights. Information such as police reports and witness statements should be obtained as quickly as possible. A time period may limit the time in which a legal action may commence in many places. An attorney may provide assistance to victims of these accidents and help them obtain compensation.
