Fleeing vehicle kills two in South Carolina

Intersections, speed, chain-reaction collisions and reckless driving may be a lethal combination for drivers. Drivers who do not exercise reasonable care or comply with traffic signals at intersection may cause a car crash and serious injuries.

The supervisor at the Governor's Mansion for three administrations, and another driver, were killed when a minivan struck their vehicles at an intersection in Columbia. Both victims died at the accident scene. Three passengers in his car were also injured and were later listed in serious condition at Palmetto Health Richland. The minivan was fleeing from the police when it struck these vehicles.

The man's vehicle also struck a taxi but the taxi driver was not injured. The Highway patrol is conducting an accident investigation and no reasons were provided on why the minivan was fleeing from police.

Drivers who do not exercise their duty of care, speed, disregard road and weather conditions or violate traffic laws cause serious and often fatal injuries. Defective vehicles, property hazards, poorly-designed roads and malfunctioning traffic signals may also lead to these consequences.

When someone is injured by a negligent driver they may be entitled to compensation to pay for medical care, rehabilitation, lost wages and property and accommodations. Family members may also file a wrongful death lawsuit for damages where a member of the family is killed in a car crash.

A prompt investigation should take place to obtain and preserve evidence. A time period may limit the time in which a civil legal action could commence. Victims of these accidents may wish to seek experienced legal consultation to preserve their rights.
