South Carolina college safeguards against pedestrian accidents

In areas where pedestrians are commonplace, it's important for cities to have the infrastructure necessary to provide for their safety. One of these areas with increased foot-traffic are college and university campuses, where students are often seen walking to and from classes or extracurricular activities. It's for this very reason that Coastal Carolina University is hoping to provide a safe environment to its students and visitors by decreasing the likelihood of a pedestrian accident with new safety infrastructure around its campus.

According to spokespersons for the CCU, the university has made official requests for several additions to nearby roadways aimed at increasing pedestrian safety. University staff hope to add a crosswalk and pedestrian timer to the intersection at Founders Drive. They also hope to add traffic signals at this location. On the nearby intersection of University Boulevard and Jackson Bluff Road they hope to add additional pedestrian timers to help ensure walkers are not hit in a crosswalk.

Making these improvements is an important advancement in the pursuit of providing safety to students in the area, which is important vital considering the potential consequences of ignoring this issue. Car accidents with pedestrians pose a threat of serious injury or even death to the pedestrians involved. Obviously, the potential for injury to the pedestrians often far exceeds the threat of injury to the drivers of the vehicle.

Even with proper infrastructure, however, pedestrian accidents can and do occur. Individuals can be side-swiped hit by a car in parking lots or at crosswalks, regardless of the attempts to provide a safe environment. For these individuals, a claim can be pursued against the negligent party to seek damages. These damageslegal compensation can serve as a mechanism for those that are injured to receive compensation for their injuries, loss of wages or and pain and suffering.
