4-vehicle crash leaves man dead, 2 in police custody

A car accident in West Columbia has left a Lexington man dead and two young males in police custody. According to police officials, the accident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on Edmund Highway near South Congaree.

The accident occurred when a truck driven by a 19-year-old male lost control, for reasons currently unknown, and crossed onto the other side of the road. The truck then struck the car of the 64-year-old Lexington man. The accident caused him multiple trauma, which lead to his death at the scene. Another car, as well as a U.S. Postal Service truck, also became involved in the crash.

To make matters worse, the 19-year-old and his 17-year-old passenger then fled the scene of the accident. Authorities located the males and arrested them soon thereafter. They were both charged with fleeing the scene of an accident involving death, and the driver of the vehicle was charged with reckless driving and driving under suspension.

The accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol as well as the coroner's office.

While it is clear that the driver is facing multiple criminal charges, what is unknown is the cause of his behavior. There are several factors that could contribute to a reckless driving charge, including speeding, disregarding of posted traffic laws or other negligent driving behavior.

For the family of the man killed in this tragic accident, pursuing legal options may be a choice open to them. In order to receive compensation for their loss, they might be able to file a wrongful death suit and potentially receive monies for the emotional pain and suffering caused, as well as funds to cover medical bills and funeral costs.
