Surfside Beach car accident leaves one dead

A car crash on Thursday afternoon has resulted in the death of an 18-year-old woman from Surfside Beach. The accident, which happened in Surfside Beach around 5:40 p.m., occurred when a 34-year-old male from New Jersey crossed the median and ran into five cars waiting at a stop light. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the man was driving on a frontage road when he crossed the median onto Highway 17 Business where the cars were stopped. In addition to the fatality, another individual was airlifted from the scene and brought to a local hospital for treatment. As of this time, that person's condition had not been released.

The reasons behind the crash are not yet known, but there are several factors that commonly can lead to car accidents. In some instances, problems with car maintenance or even driver health conditions can cause an accident.

However, poor or negligent decisions made by a driver can also lead to an accident. Examples such as drunk driving or driving while tired are often reasons behind car accidents. Another common cause that is increasingly cited is cell phone usage while driving. These activities can distract drivers from placing the necessary amount of attention on the road, such as preventing them from noticing stopped or slowing cars in time to avoid an accident.

When an individual is hurt as a consequence of another driver's poor decision making, or even outright negligence, he or she has a legal right to seek compensation for any mental or physical trauma suffered. By seeking legal assistance, drivers hurt in car accidents can often receive financial compensation that can help pay for medical fees associated with the accident, such as emergency room bills or the cost for extended medical treatment. If a family member dies as a result of an accident, wrongful death suits also are an option.
