Driver arrested in fatal pedestrian hit-and-run accident

When an individual hurts another -- whether by accident or intent -- the person has a responsibility to face the consequences of their actions and may owe the victim compensation for the injuries he or she suffers as a result. While this tenet may be accepted by many in the public, there are still those who seek to avoid responsibility for harming others. This may be the case in a pedestrian hit-and-run case which left a 19-year-old man dead in Greenville.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a young man was killed in a pedestrian accident when he was hit by a car driven by an Anderson County man. After striking the teen, the driver left the scene of the accident. The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The driver was located, arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents such as this rarely have better endings. Even when the crashes do not result in fatalities, serious injuries such as broken bones or spine and brain injuries can result when a car collides with a pedestrian.

While there are certainly measures that a pedestrian can take to decrease the potential of being struck by a vehicle, it is not always possible to prevent the pedestrian accident. Bicycle riders are often struck by vehicles whose drivers are either unaware of their presence or driving recklessly around them. Individuals walking on the side of roadways, especially during night hours, can be struck by drivers who are not mindful of their surroundings.

Pedestrians and drivers both should take extra precautions when the potential for a serious accident is present. However, pedestrians should also understand their legal rights should the worst occur and take steps to hold negligent drivers responsible for their resulting injuries.
