Columbia making safety changes to try to protect citizens

The Five Points district of the city of Columbia, South Carolina, will be making safety changes to keep pedestrians safe following a deadly pedestrian accident and subsequent public requests. As we reported earlier on this blog, the deadly accident occurred in June when a dump truck failed to stop far enough away from the crosswalk and struck a person in a motorized wheelchair crossing the intersection. In light of the accident, the Five Points Association asked city officials to take steps to ensure the safety of pedestrians in the area, as well as drivers.

Surfside Beach car accident leaves one dead

A car crash on Thursday afternoon has resulted in the death of an 18-year-old woman from Surfside Beach. The accident, which happened in Surfside Beach around 5:40 p.m., occurred when a 34-year-old male from New Jersey crossed the median and ran into five cars waiting at a stop light. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the man was driving on a frontage road when he crossed the median onto Highway 17 Business where the cars were stopped. In addition to the fatality, another individual was airlifted from the scene and brought to a local hospital for treatment. As of this time, that person's condition had not been released.

Driver arrested in fatal pedestrian hit-and-run accident

When an individual hurts another -- whether by accident or intent -- the person has a responsibility to face the consequences of their actions and may owe the victim compensation for the injuries he or she suffers as a result. While this tenet may be accepted by many in the public, there are still those who seek to avoid responsibility for harming others. This may be the case in a pedestrian hit-and-run case which left a 19-year-old man dead in Greenville.
