Pedestrian hit and killed by oncoming car near Rock Hill

The human body is not made to withstand the impact from a car crash, which makes serious injury or death a likely outcome from any collision between the two. It is often the case that such accidents result in brain injury or spinal cord injury, both with potentially fatal outcomes. Unfortunately, a recent pedestrian accident that occurred in Rock Hill resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, which is currently investigating the incident, the young man was walking along Strait Road/Secondary Road 739 at about 9 p.m. when he was hit by a car. The driver of the vehicle, a 25-year-old, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment.

There are various potential causes of pedestrian accidents, most of which are avoidable with a little foresight on both the part of the driver and the pedestrian. For instance, following well-known safety tips such as checking for traffic before crossing a road and following traffic signals as both a pedestrian and a driver could reduce the number of pedestrian accidents. When walking at night, a pedestrian who is wearing something reflective can make drivers aware of his or her presence.

Although sometimes there are adverse factors that lead to pedestrian accidents, in some cases the pedestrian has done all he or she could be reasonably expected to do and an accident still occurs. Since pedestrians are significantly more likely to be seriously injured in a car accident, it is often they who bear the brunt of the consequences.
