Drunk driving crash kills Greenville babysitter on moped

In the early morning hours of October 8 yet another fatal drunk driving accident occurred on our roadways in Greenville County. A 21-year-old woman was riding her moped home on West Hampton Boulevard about 1:30 a.m. She had just gotten done babysitting for her cousins when she was struck and killed by a 21-year-old man from Greer. The young man was driving a four-door Nissan. The force of the drunk driving crash severely injured the woman, who was not wearing a helmet, and she died from blunt force trauma to her head and neck.

The driver then fled the scene, leaving the victim alone to fight for her life. He was later arrested and charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. No information was immediately released as to the driver's blood alcohol level. A bail hearing was held Saturday afternoon, and the man was remanded to the Greenville Detention Center in lieu of $70,000 surety.

Incredibly, two uncles of the victim appeared at the bail hearing. One, a law enforcement officer, says they told the defendant they forgave him, but that he needed to "be a man and take responsibility for his actions." The two men hope that their niece's death can serve as a reminder of the deadly consequences that can result from a drunk driving accident.

One consequence for the drunk driver may well be a monetary judgment for damages awarded to the victim's estate for his negligent and perhaps reckless conduct. South Carolina law recognizes the right of the victim's family to pursue justice from this senseless tragedy. A Greenville County personal injury lawyer may offer some much-needed support and fight to see that this wrongful death is remembered and the negligent parties held accountable.
