Car crash seriously injures two Greenville County women

Emergency helicopters were called in to airlift two women to a local hospital after a horrific head-on collision in Greenville County last month. The serious car accident took place just after 11:00 a.m. when a 2000 Chevrolet Impala heading north on Lebanon road crossed the center line. It struck a 2000 Toyota Tundra heading in the other direction and both vehicles were heavily damaged.

Both women were seriously injured and airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital. The driver of the Impala has been charged with the moving violation of driving to the left of the center line for her role in the crash. According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, no charges were filed against the other driver. The road was briefly closed and fire, police, and medical responders brought to the scene of the crash. A hospital spokesman was unwilling to comment on the status of either driver; although it should be pointed out that it's normal to make no statement to the public out of respect for the patients' privacy.

This Greenville County car crash illustrates how car accidents can happen in just a moment's time. In the time it takes to switch the channel on the radio or glance at something on the side of the road, a tragedy can and does often occur. It does not necessarily take drunk driving or speeding to cause a serious or fatal accident. All it takes is one flash of inattention and lives can be changed forever.

As well intentioned as a driver may be, if that person's negligence causes serious injury to another, the law recognizes the right of the injured person (or the estate in the event of a fatal accident) to recover monetary damages for the negligence of the other party. Distracted driving may sound less serious than drunk driving, but the injuries caused can sometimes equal or exceed those caused by someone also violating the criminal law.
